Synthetic fibre examples include carbon, ceramic, glass, basalt, aramid, quartz, or polymeric materials such as polyethylene and textiles (polyester). Natural fibres comprise of plant-based fibres such as flax, bamboo, sisal, coco, hemp, jute, and cotton, as well as animal-based fibres, including wool, hair, and silk.

Our dedicated contract testing laboratory offers dimensional and tensile measurement studies for both synthetic and natural fibres. Single fibre testing is recognized as a reliable and unambiguous means of characterising fibres and filaments, when compared to tow, bundle, or yarn testing. We have experience in handling a wide range of fibres, including both virgin and recycled fibres.

Testing Services

Single fibres or filaments are mounted using Dia-Stron’s unique sample mounting method, utilising plastic tabs to align, mount, and secure fibres in place. Sample can be mounted between pairs of plastic tabs at gauge lengths of 4, 12, 20, and 30mm, secured in place with a UV-curing adhesive.

The fibre dimensions are measured using a high-resolution laser micrometer (FDAS770) with the maximum and minimum fibre dimensions being captured as the fibres are rotated through 360o. The tensile elongation is conducted using a high-resolution extensometer (LEX820) fitted with either a 2 or 20N load cell, which measures force data with excellent linearity and low compliance. Our system automation enables high-throughput testing, with sample sizes usually consisting of at least 50 fibres.

Tensile studies are typically run across three-gauge lengths to allow the system compliance to be calculated and to correct the tensile modulus and break strain parameters. Compliance corrections are conducted according to standards such as ISO 11566:1996 and ASTM C1557-20.

What’s included in our contract testing service

  • If required, we will assess the suitability of your fibres for testing before a study is commissioned.
  • We will test fibres in line with pre-agreed methodologies that fulfil your requirements.
  • We conduct a statistical analysis and a full test report. Raw and summary data can also be supplied.
